In my humble opinion, this is the best and only mixtape you could ever need and will ever want, ever again, promise. This mix is 2 hours of dubstep, drum and bass, electro, french house, more drum and bass, and a final blast of dubstep. After hearing jj's debut single, "My Life, My Swag", I had high hopes for this debut full length. Unfortunately, this does not stand up quite as well. Don't get me wrong, this album is still pretty good, but it suffers from a few problems. For one, the songs are a bit same-y sounding. Luckily, the album is very short and sweet, just like a pop album should be.

There are definitely a few great songs here, but the album is burdened by "Ecstasy", a reworking of the song Lollipop. I find it very hard to sit through without cringing and it just ruins the mood and flow of the album set up by the first few tracks. "Are You Still In Vallda?" is the standout track, a reminder not to give up on the album just yet. A good album for those who are wanting to live carefree and love life.

Favorite Tracks: Are You Still In Vallda?, From Africa To Málaga

My Rating: 7/10

-m

Tracklist:
1. The album is laced with enough great basslines to keep your head bobbing right up until the last track. The singer's dorky narrative style seems odd at first but quickly becomes charming. The first half of the album is definitively better, with "Must Be The Moon" being a clear standout, but the epic "Bend Over Beethoven" keeps the second half going strong. Overall, this is a creative and fun album.

Favorite Tracks: Must Be The Moon, Bend Over Beethoven, Myth Takes

My Rating: 7/10

-m

Tracklist:
1. Brooding folk music. First impression upon hearing the first track was kind of meh, but it gets better from there. A minor flaw is that the album is a bit long and a little same-y, but it delivers a wonderful emotion experience so I can easily tolerate the running time.

I'm pretty sure the whole of the album is a story too, and a weird one at that. For example, the opening lyric is "My mouth is filled with his ovaries." And it only gets weirder from there. This is recommended for Neutral Milk Hotel fans though, because the vocal styling is very very similar. Listen to this as a whole.

Favorite Tracks: Wild Dogs: Divorce!, they're all good though really.

My Rating: 9/10

-m

tracklisting:
1. I feel like it is hard for me to keep my writing fresh and also to convey my thoughts about music in general. Thus, I may be having much shorter entries.

Deastro is very hit and miss electro pop. Several tracks are slightly annoying and unrewarding, but there are several gems too. The problem with this album is that even the tracks that aren't particularly bad, aren't intriguing at all either. The first song, Biophelia, is the best song on the album, but with the exception of that, the latter half of the album is far superior. Overall an avergae effort worth hearing for the good tracks.

Favorite Tracks: Biophelia, Moondagger, The Shaded Forests, Kurgan Wave Number One

My Rating: 5/10

-m

tracklisting:
1. To suggest that this is the start of something magical would be a bit of an overstatement. While the album is certainly not bad, it doesn't quite spark anything or stay prominent enough to reach that point of intrigue.

While from the first few songs of the album one would guess that this is simply a subliminal collection of pop songs. Just when you think you have the band pigeonholed though, the album wanders off into a dark mess of ambient-ish tracks.

Similarly to how the dark pop piece "Fangela" and captivating slow-burner "Tunnelvision" set this album up for greatness, many of the later tracks ruin it. Example: "Babyohbabyijustcantstanditanymore", which is about as annoying to listen to as the title is to interpret.

Originally, I had rated this album much lower, but I found myself wanting to listen to it from time to time. What this says is that while as individual songs this album is a bit lacking, it works well as an album.

Also, I would like to note that I saw this band recently and they were much better in the live setting. The band had great energy and group dynamic. Opener "Only Pieces" must not have translated well on the album, because that song was the highlight of their set as it had an incredible buildup. Try out the album, and check out the band if they come around your hometown.

Favorite Tracks: Tunnelvision, Fangela

My Rating: 6/10

-m

Tracklisting:
1. My first thought is to wonder why this album is titled Posthumous Success, since this artist doesn't seem to be dead. Actually now that I think about it, with MJ's death and all this was kind of an ironic album pick. It seems true enough though that dying only seems to enhance one's musical career.

But I digress. For the most part this album is an enjoyable singer/songwriter affair with a few random kinks throw in and a few less actual songs than it seems. This is another case of an album with a good first half and a lagging second half.

The first three tracks are good and then the fifth song, "You Don't Know My Friends", is one of those kinks I mentioned, but it's still pretty decent, just a bit shoegaze-y out of nowhere. The second half is plagued with the song, instrumental, song formula. "Youth Decay" and "Chandler" just come off as boring guitar dickery and take away from the album's flow. I also disagree with having two different versions of the same track, but at least he had the sense to put them on opposite ends of the album. But I didn't like it when Yo La Tengo did it, and I still don't

In short, there are good songs here if you weave through the few stinkers.

Favorite Tracks: Been True, Favourite Colour Blue (The first one is far superior)

My Rating: 7/10

-m

tracklisting:
1. What you'll find on this album is generally inoffensive bedroom pop. Five of the ten tracks have a girl's name in the title. It's cutesy, but I feel like this album's strength is also its biggest weakness. What I mean is that the sentiment is endearing but by the time the last few tracks roll around, it just doesn't keep your attention anymore.

The first six tracks are the good ones, and the last four are just kinda disappointing. And although there's not a lot wrong with the first six tracks, they aren't particularly compelling either. Except "Maurine", that track is pretty great and the artist throws a nice little vocal swoon into the chorus. Bonus points for referencing Built To Spill in track 3.

As a whole, it's an average album that doesn't really have a positive or negative emotional affect on the listener. Just stop the album after track 6 and you'll probably have a fonder memory of it.

Favorite Tracks: Maurine, Hallie And Henry

My Rating: 5/10

-m

tracklisting:
1. In this case, we have P.O.S. To me, it seems like it would be hard to keep a hip hop album sounding fresh all the way through and not blend together, more so than pop or rock albums at least. P.O.S. does a good job of mixing things up throughout this album.

The first six tracks of this album are solid, and so I was immediately drawn in by the strength of these tracks. Unfortunately, the rest of the album alternates between lackluster songs and decent ones. Of note is the fact that P.O.S. seems to have some pretty good lyrics. While I didn't go look any up, I did catch references to The Big Lebowski, AC Slater, and Mitch Hedburg. Hearing little references like this definitely made the album more fun to listen to.

Track 2, "Drumroll", gets the energy riding high. "Goodbye" has possibly the catchiest chorus on the album and is a great all around track. The true highlight of the album though is the title track, "Never Better". It starts out inconspicuously , but the beauty of this track is the guest vocals by The Velvet Teen's singer, Judah Nagler. Now I will admit that I am probably biased, Judah being my favorite singer and all, but this track truly shows a sample of his amazing vocal capabilities.

All in all, it wouldn't hurt to give this album a try, even if you don't know much about hip hop. I certainly don't, but I was still able to find plenty of enjoyable tracks.

Favorite Tracks: Never Better, Goodbye, Savion Glover

My Rating: 6/10

-M

Tracklisting:
1. At the time I wasn't really intrigued and wrote off this band. For whatever reason I decided to go back and listen to this album and I was pleasantly surprised.

This is one of those albums that is very much improved when listening to it as an album and not as an assortment of songs. In my eyes, this album has two halves, the second starting at track 7.
The first half is mostly dominated by instrumentals, and the second half shows some actual songs sneaking out of the static.

The best way to describe this album is to tell you to look at the cover. It's a very purple record that has an overall hazy mood, but with a little white dot of melody to focus on. The second half of the album is superior to the first half, so give this one some patience. Really, all the songs with vocals are quality, the downside of the record is just that a few of the instrumentals don't really keep my attention. Otherwise, this is a good record worth checking out.

Favorite Songs: Strange Lights, Cryptograms

My Rating: 8/10

-M

Tracklisting:
1. With this being the second album I have been listening to of late that regards empty and haunted houses, I feel like I'm getting a pretty good understanding of what the listener is supposed to feel upon hearing this album.

Personally, I don't imagine haunted houses to be yellow, seems too cheerful. Unless it's sort of like the faded sepia-tone of times past, which I must say is more accurate based on the sound of this album. The one most prevalent flaw of this album is that I have to be in a certain mood to listen to it. Being outside or in the sun is just a no-no. This is very much an album to play alone in a dark house.

What Grizzly Bear does right: they make beautiful sounds and nice vocal harmonies and such.

What Grizzly Bear does that I am not particularly fond of: insert dissonant phrases( I don't know if that is the right way to describe it but you know what I mean.) into their otherwise beautiful songs. I don't really understand this, but I suppose some people must. The best example of this I can think of off hand is the chin up/cheer up part in "Lullabye". The problem is that when I think about this album, these parts make me dread listening to that specific song, making it hard to really love this album as a whole.

Besides all of that, there are some great tracks here, "Knife" being the most obviously and most immediately likeable. The second half of "On A Neck, On A Spit" is hoppin, and "Colorado" brings the album to a dark but pretty close.

Favorite Tracks: Knife, Colorado, Central And Remote

My Rating: 6/10

-M

Tracklisting:
1. "lover" is an unintelligible mangle of noise punk that is somehow very charming. "vermin" manages to be the one slow and semi-listenable song on the album. it's a nice one to add to sleep mixes and conjures thoughts of parting black atlantic seas in the night, freezing in the water, and imagining the souls of shipwrecked sailors floating around you.

teenage super party is an all-out extravaganza.

like.

-k

Radical Face - Ghost

The album Ghost by Radical Face, is not necessarily treading new ground, but what it does, it does very well. Ghost is aptly named, for all the tracks seem to be connected by a recurring theme of old haunted houses and ghosts. Nearly all of the tracks evoke childhood memories from the places you grew up. Consequently, listening to this album makes wherever you are at right now feel just that little bit more homely, and certainly not in a plain way.

Perhaps I just relate really well to this record since I am at that point in my life where I no longer have a home. Though I live in a house, it is oft empty and dark, much like the houses revisited in this album. Makes me wish I lived in a time where you had one home that was central to your whole childhood. Now it feels like a house is just a house, no matter the location or the contents.

Regardless, Ghost is a pleasant trip down memory lane. The gentle explosion into the chorus of "Welcome Home, Son" is moving, "Wrapped In Piano Strings" is an addicting and standout song, and the album comes to a touching close with the track "Homesick". Simply a beautiful folk pop record.

Favorite Tracks: Welcome Home Son, Wrapped In Piano Strings, The Strangest Things

My Rating: 9/10

-M

Tracklisting:
1. But after hearing this album, I may have to go listen to this artist a bit more. Admittedly, King Creosote is an artist that caters to my particular tastes: indie rock meets folk meets electronic.

There's something about this album that sounds very refreshing. The singer has a nice voice, and something about the percussion on this album I just really like. The only bad thing really is that it sounds a bit same-y after a while, though there are a few tracks which mix it up a bit. Solid singer/songwriter material with a bit of flair. Just try it out yourself, you'll probably like it.

Favorite Tracks: No One Had It Better, Rims

My Rating: 7/10

-M

Tracklisting:
1. Some tracks are immediately catching, particularly Teenagers and No One Does it Like You. It's not the kind of album you must listen to several times to like, but to fully appreciate all the nuances in noise demands more than one spin. Fine freak folk whimsy.

In Ear Park is the sound of a little boy's memories of his father and summers well spent.

-k

TV On The Radio - Dear Science

I used to hate this album. I really liked Cookie Mountain, so I expected to like this album, but when I first heard it, I couldn't stand it. I tried a few more times later on and still, nothing. I found myself turning it off halfway through. I recently decided to give it another go and after a few listens it just clicked.

What I love about TV On The Radio (and most bands in general), is when they are able to create something that doesn't sound like everything else. In this category, TV On The Radio is king. The style on this album is all over the place, and yet the band has no real peers.

The first problem is simply that the first track is possibly the worst on the album, and the second half in general is far superior. The almost-rapping on "Dancing Choose" is great, "DLZ" gets up in your face, and "Family Tree" is simply beautiful.

I feel like a fool not to have realized that this album would be a huge grower. TV On The Radio is practically the definition of a grower band. I recommend you give this album a few listens... and then perhaps a few more.

Favorite Tracks: Family Tree, Love Dog, Crying

My Rating: 8/10

-M

Tracklisting:
1. It was about time I got around to hearing their full album.

The album is decent, I would rank it as slightly above average. The key to enjoying the album is not to go into it expecting the same caliber of tracks as the three previously mentioned. In fact, I recommend skipping those three when listening to the rest for the first time. Needless to say, the first time I played the album, I was shocked to hear the picking of an acoustic guitar upon the beginning of the second track.

I can't help but feel like MGMT has a completely different sound on these songs than the three that made them so popular. The stripped down sound of "Weekend Wars" and "Pieces Of What" just isn't this band playing to their strengths. From there on, "The Youth" is pretty good actually, "Of Moons, Birds, & Monsters" and "The Handshake" are both about half good and half forgettable, and the rest of the album is just plain forgettable.

I was a bit disappointed that this album didn't have any hidden gems, like albums tend to have. It was better than I had initially expected though. Checking this out wouldn't be a complete waste of time, but by the time the second half rolls around, you'll be wanting to go back and give "Kids" another listen instead.

Favorite Tracks: Kids, Time To Pretend, Electric Feel

My Rating: 6/10

-M

Tracklisting:
1. I listened to their new album because it is free and because it has been getting some critical acclaim. From what I can gather from their website, this album was funded entirely by fan donations, which is why it is free. Pretty cool if you ask me. Anyone wanna help fund me? Ha.

Anyways, I came into this album not exactly sure of what to expect, but a bit scared of the progressive metal nametag. Upon playing the album, the first minute will blow you away, and at :52 seconds, you will turn your head to your iPod and say 'whoa'. Unfortunately, it quickly slows down a bit to an initially more disappointing part, before the second half of the song turns super cool again.

The first three tracks are incredibly beautiful and interesting, and with the exception of a cheesy and degrading guitar solo in the middle of track 2, there are no real flaws. This gave me high hopes for the album, but unfortunately the last two tracks are something completely different and disappointing. They are clearly more metal influenced, so I suppose if you are a fan you may enjoy them regardless. However, I find that they take away from what was looking to be one of the more beautiful albums I have heard of late. The album is still worth checking out though, if only for the first three tracks.

Favorite Tracks: An Except From 6,000,000,000,000 Miles..., Keep Light Near You..., Rose Quartz Turning To Glass

My Rating: 6/10

-M

Tracklisting:
1. The self-proclaimed "Death-Indie" band released their debut album, The Worries, in America just earlier this year. I wouldn't say death-indie is a very appropriate genre for the band, however. The band is a typical indie-rock band with an overarching post-rock element. I think. Truly, this band sounds like none I have heard before, which is part of what I love about them.

What I find intriguing about this band is that while the instrumentation is certainly interesting, the lyrics themselves are bizarre. One song, for instance, talks about deodorant and smelly armpits, on more than one occasion. While listening to these lyrics, they slowly took hold of me and I became very mesmerized by them.

"Mac, get your gear on, let's visit Norway.
They shot a dog and then they killed themselves.
We found a monster and we brought it back
It imitates us and no one trusts anyone."

I realized that what I love so much about this album is that it speaks to me. It tells of the worries in our lives, both the little things and the big things. Everything from the need for prescription deodorant and making child support payments, all the way up to thoughts of suicide. Looking at this spectrum of worries, makes me wonder: what are all the things that cause me to worry? and perhaps most importantly, why do I worry about them at all?

Favorite tracks: Treehouse, Mac Get Your Gear, Dads

My Rating: 8/10

-M

Tracklisting:
1.
