Deerhunter - Cryptograms

I was first introduced to Deerhunter last year with the release of their album Microcastle. At the time I wasn't really intrigued and wrote off this band. For whatever reason I decided to go back and listen to this album and I was pleasantly surprised.

This is one of those albums that is very much improved when listening to it as an album and not as an assortment of songs. In my eyes, this album has two halves, the second starting at track 7.
The first half is mostly dominated by instrumentals, and the second half shows some actual songs sneaking out of the static.

The best way to describe this album is to tell you to look at the cover. It's a very purple record that has an overall hazy mood, but with a little white dot of melody to focus on. The second half of the album is superior to the first half, so give this one some patience. Really, all the songs with vocals are quality, the downside of the record is just that a few of the instrumentals don't really keep my attention. Otherwise, this is a good record worth checking out.

Favorite Songs: Strange Lights, Cryptograms

My Rating: 8/10

i still can't really get into microcastle, but i'll give the fluorescent grey ep a look, thanks guys.

sunil, i'll check out the patrick wolf, wasn't a huge fan of magic position but i'll give his new one a try. as for hazel st, it's good, I like all of the tracks with vocals, strange lights is the one that stood out the most and then i picked cryptograms kinda randomly just to have another track.

thanks for reading dudes, i'll try to get some more done soon.
